Heidi Kent is Executive Director.

Heidi succeeded Steve Baranov as executive director of South Los Angeles Health Projects and LA BioMed’s principal investigator for South LA Health Projects programs in December 2012.

She began her journey with WIC in 1980 as a nutrition educator, teaching participants individually and in groups during a temporary summer job at the Compton WIC site. Heidi enjoyed working with moms and babies so much that she continued working for WIC while pursuing her graduate degree in public health nutrition at UCLA.

After receiving her master’s degree, she also became a registered dietitian and later a certified lactation educator.

Heidi was promoted and worked three years as a site supervisor at the Hubert Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center until assuming greater administrative responsibilities for the organization. These included selection, hiring and training of staff as well as personnel management. In 1990 she became deputy director.

Heidi played a key role in the expansion of WIC in the 1990s, growing the staff, adding new WIC sites, enhancing our services and adding new programs. Today she oversees approximately 260 employees.

Heidi is especially proud of the many staff who have advanced through the ranks and now are in leadership positions.

Heidi was president of the California WIC Association (CWA) and for many years active on the CWA board of directors.
